WEST CAMPUS - UT

The West Campus area of Austin is the immediate area west of the University of Texas at Austin. It had traditionally been populated mostly by students, but as the urban core of Austin has grown, West Campus has transformed into a community mixed with students, professors, white-collar professionals and young families.  Over the past few years, development in this area has been booming.

The area’s architecture is as diverse as the residents, and it’s not uncommon to see 40-80 year old buildings next to sparkling new mid-rises. The neighborhood provides a varied range of housing types, including: craftsman homes, small mansions, bungalows, duplexes and condominiums. West Campus is densely populated, and zoning restrictions literally vary from street to street. This vibrant community certainly feeds off the energy of UT, but many parts of this neighborhood are actually quiet and fairly subdued.

The West Campus area is best known for the University of Texas at Austin and their much heralded Athletics Program.

Guadalupe St. ("The Drag") is the major thoroughfare of this area, and it's considered a hip shopping enclave of clothing, furniture and gift shops, and a great "good eats" zone.  Famous locales include the Hole in the Wall, Showdown Saloon, and the Co-op.

The area is also host to world-class museums such as the LBJ Library and the Blanton Museum of Art.  At the western edge of the area, lies Pease Park, a relaxing green space, that's an Austin favorite.
