OLD WEST AUSTIN

The Old West Austin Historic District has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The area is recognized both for its architectural and historical significance. Old West Austin has traditionally been the one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Austin, and the homes reflect the architectural styles popular from mid-19^th through mid-20^th centuries.

Properties in Old West Austin are meticulously maintained, the streets and yards are lined with majestic oak trees, and homes in this area include period revival residences, bungalows, cottages, as well as architect designed, elegant mansions. The area tends to appeal to families, successful professionals, and retirees. Although the neighborhood attracts the affluent, the people are far from stuffy, and instead, quite friendly and welcoming.

Old West Austin, in this case, consists of the Pemberton Heights Neighborhood, the Old Enfield Neighborhood, and lastly the Bryker Woods Neighborhood.  Sometimes, Tarrytown and Clarksville can be included in discussions of Old West Austin, but they have been split out, to provide more comprehensive descriptions.

Two examples of famous homes in Old West Austin include: Woodlawn (Pease Mansion) and the Pemberton Castle.  While certainly these are two extravagant examples of Old West Austin Homes, many can be found at much more modest prices.
